This will be the last edition of the Global Woman Newsletter this year.  Global Woman Newsletter wishes you a wonderful holiday season, and look forward to informing you in the New Year.

In the final edition of the Global Woman Newsletter in the year 2018, Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation (GWPF) takes this opportunity to extend their sincere gratitude for the support you, their supporters have given them this year.  They use this special edition to review 2018 and take a peek into their 2019 plans.

During the holiday season more than ever, our thoughts turn gratefully to those of you who have made our progress possible.  And in this spirit we say, simply but sincerely, thank you and best wishes for the Holiday Season and a Happy New Year.

A Synopsis of 2018

  • Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation began the year with the kick-off of their Support Group Workshop, a component of their Wholesome Organic Relief Program. The Support group grew each month, and became popular as a monthly event.  Their guest speakers ranged from physical therapists, psychologists, a survivor of FGM, to a gynecologist, an urologist, and a couple of FBI agents.
  • GWPF continued to build a productive relationship with the Milken Institute for Public Health at George Washington University in a practicum. One student researched and compiled a special training manual for law enforcement, while another assisted in the design of the GWPF new website.
  • Early in the year, members of GWPF traveled to Richmond, Virginia twice within a two-week period to testify before the Senate Committee on Crime and before the Senate Budget Committee. The purpose of those testimonies was to amend the FGM state law from a misdemeanor to a class 2 felony.  The Bill 47 was successfully passed, and the Governor signed it into law on July 1st.
  • Under their Survivor Resettlement Program, GWPF assisted a survivor of FGM in obtaining her asylum in the U.S. They also assisted the same survivor in obtaining a job.  GWPF currently has asylum pending for 3 FGM survivors.  This program was implemented in 2018.
  • GWPF had the opportunity to attend and present at the United Nations Women’s sixty-second Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) for the first time.
  • Under their prevention program, Kids Reach Shield, GWPF launched a special training for law enforcement. They also had opportunities to train school nurses on FGM.
  • Attended by people from 4 different continents, the Global Woman Awards was held on Friday, October 26 They hosted the first stand-alone awards ceremony this year.  In the past, their awards had been on the same day of their 5K Walk.
  • GWPF hosted their 5th consecutive Walk To End FGM on October 27th.
  • GWPF collaborated with #Happy Period and the Northern Virginia Business & Professional Women’s Club in a feminine napkin drive for girls in Sierra Leone. To date, they have collected close to 3500 feminine napkins.
  • The Foundation welcomed 3 new board members this year.

A Sneak Peek into 2019

  • GWPF plans to launch the 2019 registration for their Walk To End FGM in January of 2019. Watch out for the announcement in the New Year.
  • The monthly Support Group Workshop will continue in 2019 but with an expansion nationwide. Through technology, survivors of FGM will have the opportunity to join the conversation, and receive support from the group.  Due to the privacy and confidentiality of the group, if you are interested in calling in to the group, please contact GWPF privately at (703) 818-3787 or info@globalwomanpeacefoundation.org and write “Support Group” in the subject line.  For those who have already expressed interest, please listen out for personal invites and announcements.
  • Please check out 2019 calendar for additional information and activities.

Attention: The U.S. government opposes FGM/C, no matter the type, degree, or severity, and no matter what the motivation for performing it. The U.S. government considers FGM/C to be a serious human rights abuse, gender-based violence, and, when done to children, a form of child abuse. It is against the law to perform FGM/C in the United States on a girl under the age of 18 or to send or attempt to send her outside the United States so FGM/C can be performed. People who violate this law can face prison time and significant immigration consequences. Additionally, anyone who performs FGM/C on a woman 18 years old or older without her consent may be charged with a crime under other laws.  If someone performed FGM/C on you, you have not violated any U.S. laws and are not at fault, call 1-800-994-9662.
