Special Feature – Giving Tuesday

The Tuesday after Thanksgiving is traditionally known as the day of giving.  There are even opportunities from businesses for shoppers to make generous donations to their charities of choice.  When shoppers make their payments today, whether transactions are online or in person, they can ask that a percentage of their sales be donated to a chosen charity.  #GivingTuesday is special, especially to nonprofit organizations.  #GivingTuesday is the day when charities, families, businesses, community centers, and students around the world come together for one common purpose.  They celebrate giving and generosity.  If you are wondering what the origin of #GivingTuesday is and how it all began.  In 1874, a cultural center in New York City, 92nd Y started bringing people together around the values of service and giving back.  Six years ago, the same cultural center created #GivingTuesday.  The day is intended to connect diverse groups of individuals, communities and organizations in the spirit of giving.  #GivingTuesday is a global movement, which unites countries around the world by sharing their capacity to care for and empower one another.

See how you can make a difference for us this giving season under Amazon Smile Donations and Krispy Kreme Digital Dozens.

Special Feature – Appreciation to Our Donors, Participants & Sponsors

The Executive Committee, the Board of Directors, the Advisory Board, the Nomination Committee, Volunteers, Event Planners, and partners of Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation (GWPF) send their profound appreciation to all of their sponsors, donors, supporters, speakers, awardees, and virtual walkers for helping to make the 2020 virtual Global Woman Awards and the virtual Walk To End FGM a great success last month.  GWPF hosted their 2-day virtual event, with the activities commencing with their Global Woman Awards ceremony Friday afternoon on October 16th in a live Zoom broadcast.  The event was in collaboration with their partner, George Washington University, SheFFA Foundation of New York, and One Thousand Voices.

Both the Global Woman Awards and the Walk To End FGM were held virtually through live stream broadcast.  The Global Woman Awards was emceed by Tyra Garlington, an international talk show host.  Executive Director Angela Peabody shared the history of GWPF, and some of their successes in the last 10 years of their existence.  The Keynote Address was delivered by Lyric Thompson, the Senior Director of Policy and Advocacy at the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW).  Also speaking that afternoon was Maryum Saifee, a women’s rights activist and former Diplomat.  Entertainment for the afternoon was provided by U.S. Jazz Musician, Benjamin Jackson Caesar, and American Singer, Songwriter and Musician, Antoinette “Butterscotch” Clinton.  GWPF recognized and honored 10 people that Friday afternoon, including a high school student from Virginia, Marin Hoang for the “Student Ambassador Award”.

Watch the recording from October 16, 2020:

Emceed by Linord Moudou, another international talk show host, the pre-walk program on Saturday began with a video from GWPF’s partner, One Thousand Voices, followed by entertainment from Florida’s musician, Royce Lovett.  The Keynote Speaker of the morning was Former State Representative of Maine, Heather Sirocki.  Lovett serenaded the virtual audience with another of his mixture of R&B and Hip Hop music, to end the pre-walk program.  GWPF is asking for photographs from those who walked on Saturday, October 17th and captured photos.  Those photos, with your permission will be posted to GWPF’s Social Media pages, to remember the first virtual Walk To End FGM.

Thanksgiving Knowledge

Prior to 1863, the U.S. government informally recognized periodic days of thanksgiving. In 1777, for example, Congress declared a day of thanksgiving to celebrate the Continental Army’s victory over the British at Saratoga. Similarly, President George Washington, in 1789, declared a day of thanksgiving and prayer to honor the new Federal Constitution. But it took the national trauma of a Civil War to make Thanksgiving a formal, annual holiday.

With the war raging in the autumn of 1863, President Abraham Lincoln had very little for which to be thankful. The Union victory at Gettysburg the previous July had come at the dreadful human cost of 51,000 estimated casualties, including nearly 8,000 dead.  It took the persistence of a woman to make Thanksgiving Day a national holiday.  Sarah Josepha Hale, editor of Godey’s Lady’s Book, provided the necessary inspiration.  Hale, who had been campaigning for a national Thanksgiving holiday for nearly two decades, wrote to President Lincoln on Sept. 23, 1863, and asked him to create the holiday “as a permanent American custom and institution.”  The president complied and issued the Thanksgiving Proclamation on October 3, 1863, that the last Thursday of November would be observed annually as Thanksgiving Day.

Yesterday, we featured our 3 entertainers of the event.  We wish Happy Birthday to our Friday Male Entertainer today, Jackson Caesar!  Today, October 15th, our Thursday feature is our Mistress of Ceremony, Tyra Garlington

Tyra Garlington

Our Mistress of Ceremony is Tyra Garlington, an author, inspirational speaker, local, national and international talk show host, business owner and survivor.  They coined the term “steel magnolia” to describe a Southern woman whose delicate exterior belies an unbreakable core.  Although she is not Southern by birth, Tyra Garlington’s life and professional experiences give the right to “steel magnolia” as her own. The Cincinnati native holds a master’s in psychology from San Diego State University.  Tyra has been a teacher and principal, whose belief in the ability of children to rise above their bleak surroundings helped to turn around an entire school.  She has been a member of the clinical staff at University of California, San Diego, helping tormented individuals find their way to peace. She has worked at IBM as a marketing consultant for 22 years, in higher education administration, and local, state and federal governments.  She has been a volunteer mentor and Education Pillar Chair on the Board of Leadership Fairfax, in Fairfax Virginia, guiding the development of the next generation of leaders and setting the course for the educational goals of the program. She continues to deposit in this and future generations through her servant leadership in Rotary International, several ministries in her church, and life skills coaching.  When Tyra enters a room, people see the smile, the style and grace.  She says she is always blessed.  She calms the jittery nerves of young speakers and is herself the quiet calm at the center of any storm – even those in her own life.  For Tyra Garlington, there have been many obstacles.  She has suffered abuse, a brain tumor, loss and cancer and she stood her ground against each one, calling on her unlimited faith and belief in God.  In typical “steel magnolia” fashion, Tyra Garlington turned her internal pains into talks that would help others who faced insurmountable odds.  She is drawn to charitable and service organizations that tackle domestic violence, homelessness and children who live in worlds they cannot control. The Steel Magnolia from the Mid-West will be there to help them.  Tyra believes that nothing that has happened in her life will be wasted.  Her next chapter will be shaped by her need to continually learn, engage, and encourage others both personally and professionally.

We feature our 3 entertainers of the event, today, Wednesday, October 14th:

Butterscotch

Our Friday Female Entertainer, Butterscotch is an American singer/songwriter/musician.  Although she is heavily influenced by jazz, classical, hip hop and R&B artists, she incorporates beatboxing into her compositions with instruments she plays, including the piano, flute, saxophone, bass and guitar. After high school Butterscotch was accepted into the music program at California State University Sacramento as a Classical Piano Major but after a couple years she was touring so much and decided to pursue her dreams of making it in the musical world.  Now Butterscotch is an internationally recognized vocal artist, most popularly known from her appearance on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” as a finalist. Prior to America’s Got Talent, Butterscotch claimed titles as both the first International World Female Beatbox Champion and the West Coast Beatbox Champion for both genders. Butterscotch has made such an impact on young women, she was even the inspiration of a teenage girl to be transformed into a beatboxer on MTV’s MADE and also performed on Tyra Banks show encouraging another young talented female beatboxer to continue working to be on top.  She has opened up for Wyclef Jean, Will.I.AM, Fishbone and many more. Last summer Butterscotch received the honor to record with the legendary bass trio Stanley Clarke, Marcus Miller and Victor Wooten on their album and is also guest artist on the George Benson project, “Songs & Stories”.  She has toured in Australia, Germany and Hong Kong and continues to live her dream of touching the world with her music.

After high school, Royce got married and had two kids, all while chasing his dream to play music. While he’s had some success, he’s also had some ups and down supporting his family financially.  He appeared on the television show, The Voice to show his children that success is not measured by money, but by living out your dream.  Royce’s sound is categorized in his own personalized genre “cerebral-soul.” He says his music makes people tap into their intellect. “Music can motivate you to change, get into your mind and into your soul,” Royce says. “It’s a ripple effect from one place to another.” He commonly uses this motivation in performances by involving the crowd, and making fans feel in touch with the music. Whether it’s a simple snap or “getting lost in the music” Royce makes his audience a part of the music.  Lovett’s guitar is his musical weapon. It has helped to define his sound and influence his career.  Royce’s personal motivation has paved the way for his many accomplishments in music, and although he manages himself, Royce has a large support group to cheer him on.

7 DAYS FROM “GLOBAL WOMAN AWARDS” & 8 DAYS FROM “WALK TO END FGM”

We are getting close – Here we are in October already, and the 2-day event is next week!  It is exactly 7 days until the Global Woman Awards and 8 days from the Walk To End FGM (#walk2endfgm).  Are you ready?  Have you registered yet?  Register at our link below and be a part of a memorable event of its 6th and 7th year respectively.  This week and next week, we will feature 2 awardees a day.  Yesterday, we featured Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee and Attorney Jeanne Smoot.  Here are our featured Honorees for today, Wednesday, October 7th:

Donald A. Strong

Our 2020 Awardee in Education/Training is Donald Strong, the Director of Research Coordination and External Funding for the Department of Prevention and Community Health in the Milken Institute School of Public Health at The George Washington University. He is responsible for developing relationships and collaborations with foundations, local and state government entities and other funding sources.  Since joining the Department of Prevention and Community Health in 2013, Mr. Strong has been instrumental in assisting faculty in obtaining research, evaluation and training commitments from The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), The District of Columbia Department of Health, as well as health departments in several surrounding Maryland counties.  For almost 20 years Mr. Strong has worked with medical providers and long-term care organizations to obtain contracts with The Department of Veterans Affairs and other federal agencies. Donald is an ardent advocate against FGM, and has been a supporter of GWPF and its programs.

Purity Soinato Oiyie

Our 2020 honoree for Advocacy is Purity Soinato Oiyie, 22, from Narok County, Kenya, was barely 11 when she ran away from home to a church rescue center that protected her from Female Genital Mutilation and child marriage. Her father wanted her to undergo FGM and marry to a 70-year old man.  She is from Kenya’s indigenous Maasai community and against all odds, completed her education. Purity was the first girl in her village to say no to FGM, and chose to attend college.  She now empowers other girls and parents to reject this harmful practice, and choose education.  Her work contributes towards the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5, which explicitly targets to end all forms of violence against women and girls, including harmful practices like FGM, as well as SDG 4, which promotes lifelong education and learning for women and girls.  Purity founded the Silan Foundation as a dream-come-true for teenage girls.  Purity was awarded the Young Women Leaders Mediation Ambassadorship by IPHRD Africa in Ethiopia.  Her dream is to see the next generation of girls reading books, watching videos or listening to stories from elders about an eradicated FGM.
