Happy New Year – January Edition

Welcome to the first edition of the monthly Global Woman Newsletter this year.  Global Woman Newsletter wishes you a Happy New Year, and looks forward to keeping you informed on a monthly basis this New Year.

Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation (GWPF) wishes you a Happy New Year and welcomes our readers and supporters to 2020!  It is our hope that you had a wonderful holiday season, and we are looking forward to a prosperous year ahead.  The organization is excited to begin a new year and a new decade, which is also the 10th anniversary of the founding of Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation.  With enthusiastic friends and supporters, it is a delight to enter the 10th year of serving women and girls.  We thank you for making it possible for us to have achieved some of our goals.  We could not have accomplished what we have in the last decade without your support.  GWPF has great plans for this year, so continue to read our newsletter the first Tuesday of each month, to stay updated as the news unfolds during the course of the year.  We look forward to working with you in 2020, together, helping to make it a productive and successful year.  Here are some of the January 2020 activities we have in the life of GWPF.

We will be making some changes to this newsletter in the coming months for the benefit of our readers.  Instead of having one lengthy article, we will have brief columns of various voices and topics.  Our readers will have the opportunity to hear directly from survivors of FGM, the community, and advocates.  If there is something you would like to see included in our monthly newsletter, please feel free to inform us.

Later this month, we plan to launch our official fundraising and registration page for the 2020 Walk To End FGM.  Yes, this event is not scheduled to take place until October 17th; however with an early launch, we will have 10 months to prepare participants, speakers, guests and awardees for their travels.  Please read the February edition of Global Woman Newsletter for details about the registration launch.

The 2020 Support Group Workshop will return on Saturday, January 18th.  We will be sending out an announcement and individual invitations will go out as early as next week.  If you are a survivor of FGM or you believe that you are at risk of it being done to you, please contact Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation at info@globalwomanpeacefoundation.org to have your name added to the invitation list.

GWPF welcomes your continued support in 2020.

The Year in Review of 2019 & a Glimpse of 2020

This will be the last weekly edition of the Global Woman Newsletter.  Global Woman Newsletter wishes you a wonderful holiday season, and looks forward to informing you every month in the New Year.

In the final weekly edition of the Global Woman Newsletter, Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation (GWPF) takes this opportunity to extend our sincere gratitude for the support you have given us this year.  We use this special edition to review 2019 and take a peek into our 2020 plans.

During the holiday season more than ever, our thoughts turn gratefully to those of you who have made our progress possible.  And in this spirit we say, simply but sincerely, thank you and best wishes for the Holiday Season and a Happy New Year. We hope you will consider continuing your support to our programs.  Now here is a review of 2019 and a glimpse of 2020.

A Year in Review of 2019

  • Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation began the year with our Support Group Workshop, a component of our Wholesome Organic Relief Program. Our Support group continued to grow each month.  The group has continued to be of interest in the community.  This year, we even mobilized the group in an outreach to the community.
  • We continued to build a productive relationship with the Milken Institute for Public Health at George Washington University in a practicum.
  • Early in the year, 2 board members of GWPF traveled to Richmond, Virginia to testify to the Virginia Education Senate Committee. Once again, we worked with Senator Black (now retired) to get a bill passed, to include FGM in the Family Life Education Curriculum.  The bill was successful and was signed by the Virginia Governor in July.
  • We had the opportunity to attend and present at the United Nations Women’s sixty-third Commission on the Status of Women (CSW63) along with the US End FGM/C Network.
  • GWPF sponsored a survivor for restorative surgery this year.
  • Under our prevention program, Kids Reach Shield, we continued the special training for law enforcement, by training police officers and detectives in Arlington, Virginia.
  • We conducted a special webinar to the Student National Medical Association (SNMA) on FGM.
  • We made an appearance in a Congressional Staff briefing to testify on FGM.
  • Attended by people from various U.S. states, the Global Woman Awards was held on Friday, October 18 Included in the program was a special panel with panelists such as Dr. Morissanda Kouyate, Shelby Quast, and others.  They presented the first Lisa C. Bruch Woman of the Year Award, named after their late Board Advisor.  The recipient of this award was Monalisa Dugue.
  • We hosted our 6th consecutive Walk To End FGM on October 19th.
  • We continued to collaborate with #Happy Period and the Northern Virginia Business & Professional Women’s Club in a feminine napkin drive for girls in Sierra Leone. We provided close to 1000 feminine pads to girls in Sierra Leone this year.
  • We welcomed Virginia Business Woman, Jacqui Olkin as a new board member, California Media personality, Maria Sanchez and the President of the National Association of Negro Business & Professional Women’s Club, Sherelle Carper as new Advisors to the Board.

A Glimpse into 2020

  • Global Woman Newsletter will switch to monthly from weekly
  • We plan to launch the 2020 registration for the Walk To End FGM in late January to early February of 2020. Watch out for the announcement in the Global Woman Newsletter.
  • Plans for special distribution of feminine pads in Liberia.
  • Special observance of International Day of Zero Tolerance.
  • Possible partnerships and collaborations to be announced.
  • New spring fundraiser to be announced.
  • The monthly Support Group Workshop will continue in 2020 but with an expansion nationwide. Through technology, survivors of FGM will have the opportunity to join the conversation, and receive support from the group.  Due to the privacy and confidentiality of the group, if you are interested in calling in to the group, please contact GWPF privately at (703) 832-2642 or info@globalwomanpeacefoundation.org and write “Support Group” in the subject line.  For those who have already expressed interest, please watch for personal invites and announcements.
  • Please check our 2020 calendar for additional information and activities.

Global Woman Newsletter Moves to Monthly in 2020

The Global Woman Newsletter (GWN) has been circulated weekly since April 2014.  GWN has shared stories from all aspects with its readers; stories about Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) laws, personal stories of FGM survivors, U.S. Federal stories, State Legislators, and, even FGM fatalities in the remotest villages in Liberia.  This newsletter has shared how Nigeria and the Gambia banned the practice of FGM, and it has celebrated the successes of other like-minded organizations, as well as the successes of its Publisher, Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation (GWPF) over the last 5 years.  This was all happily done on a weekly schedule.  Now it is time to change the frequency of the GWN.  As of January 2020, GWN will become a monthly newsletter, coming to your inbox on the first Tuesday of each month.  Therefore the first edition of GWN in 2020 will be released on Tuesday, January 7th.  After this week’s edition, there are only 2 more weekly editions, as we close out 2019 to welcome the year 2020.

To share some statistics with you about the GWN, in 2014, only 25 editions of the newsletter were released.  In 2015, there were 31 editions sent out; however in 2016, 51 editions were released, and in 2017 and 2018, 50 editions were released respectively.  This year, 2019, the most editions will be released – 52 editions.  Since the newsletter was launched, a grand total of 234 editions were sent out to you.  GWPF hopes the 12 editions in 2020 will continue the flow of information, updates, news, and stories.  If there is any topic you would like to see GWN feature in the coming year, please send an email to info@globalwomanpeacefoundation.org.

The monthly newsletter will not only have one long story, as the weekly newsletter did.  The monthly will provide updates from the previous month, and short stories occurring in the community, national information in the U.S. and international information, surrounding gender based violence.  GWN looks forward to working with you in the New Year.
