Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation has created an awareness to help fight current cutting, and to put an end to Female Genital Mutilation practice. They specialize in services that help women deal with the reality of what has happened to them as children, and how to cope with daily life as victims of FGM. The Executive Director of Global Woman P. E. A.C. E. Foundation is a phenomenal woman. She always goes above and beyond to take the time, and the patient to help you get through whatever it is that you are going through, including the emotional part of dealing with Female Genital Mutilation, and by helping you gain your confidence back.  I am very thankful to work with this amazing organization. Because of Global Woman P.E.A.C.E Foundation, I can now share my story with the world, and help impact other women who are going through the same or similar situation.  I feel truly blessed to be a part of an amazing journey in uplifting the inner souls of women, and to make them feel beautiful from within.”

GWPF Prepares for Next Week

The road to preparing for the 2-day event Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation (GWPF) hosts annually is a lengthy 12 plus-month affair.  The plans usually begin the week following the Walk To End FGM, when GWPF submits their application to secure an October date with the National Park Service (NPS) for the next year.  From the day the date is secured with NPS, the preparations are launched; the date of the Global Woman Awards is then automatically set for the Friday before Walk Day.  So Friday, October 18th and Saturday, October 19th were anticipated a year ago.

For the past three years, GWPF has partnered with the Milken Institute for Public Health of George Washington University in hosting a prelude to the Walk To End FGM the evening before.  Although the evening is named the Global Woman Awards, there is more than just the award ceremony.  In October 2017, GWPF and Milken co-hosted a panel discussion on female genital mutilation (FGM), led by renowned Urologist and Surgeon, Dr. Pierre Foldes.  Foldes is the surgeon who developed the clitoral restorative surgery, a procedure more commonly known as the “Foldes Technique”.  The awards were handed out to the awardees the next day at the Walk To End FGM.  The following year in October 2018, the duo of GWPF and Milken agreed on an encore, but they included the awards ceremony with the prelude evening.  The theme was to dispel the myths of FGM, delivered by KARAMAH’s legal great, Dr. Azizah Y. al-Hibri, who really helped to dispel those myths last October.

Now in less than two weeks this year, Milken and GWPF are collaborating for the 3rd year in another Walk Day prelude on Friday, October 18th with a panel discussion on FGM, led by the esteemed IAC and U.N. great, Dr. Morissanda Kouyate.  Joining Dr. Kouyate in this year’s panel discussion are:  Rahmah Abdulaleem, Esq. of KARAMAH, Michelle Mitchell of Partners for Health, Chisina Kapungu of International Center for Research on Women, and Dr. Karen McDonnell of George Washington University.  This year’s theme is “Why Laws and Policies are Important in Preventing FGM in the U.S.”  The theme was selected as a special tribute to lawmakers, since six U.S. states had FGM criminalized in 2019.  Leaving it for last on the program next Friday evening, but not the least is the presentation of awards to distinguished men and women.

These awardees have demonstrated their commitment and dedication to the campaign against FGM.  Awardee Dr. Ghada Khan has been relentless in her work with the US End FGM/C Network.  She thrives to actually make 2030 the year FGM comes to an end.  Awardee Sandra Roland volunteers her free time as an attorney to help FGM Survivor Asylees file their papers for asylum in the U.S.  Like Sandra Roland, Awardee Dr. Willa Jones volunteers her spare time in counseling FGM survivors to help them assimilate to normalcy in their post-FGM life.  Awardee Djessou Kouyate founded and runs a successful summer camp each August for boys and girls to teach them about FGM.  Awardee Maryum Saifee, a survivor of FGM uses her experience with FGM as part of her mission to help end FGM in the world.  Awardee Edwige Dossou-Kitti is a graduate student who had been vigilant in raising awareness of FGM among her fellow students, friends, and professors.  Awardee Monalisa Dugue is a devout advocate in helping to write legislation and policies for laws to be passed against FGM.  Now for the only two male awardees:  Representative Thomas Murt was diligent in putting forth the bill to have FGM criminalized in his Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  His bill failed several times, but that did not stop him until he was successful this year in making his state the 34th U.S. state to make FGM illegal.  Awardee Dr. Morissanda Kouyate has dedicated most of his career in advocating against FGM through his organization, Inter-African Committee (IAC).  He helped champion February 6th being proclaimed as the International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM by the United Nations.

With the awardees and speakers confirmed, the program began to take shape, after several collaborative meetings, huddles and final decisions.  At this point, GWPF finds itself going over the final checklists to ensure that nothing has been overlooked for next week Friday and Saturday.  After a long year of planning and anticipation, GWPF is actually referring to the 2-day event as something that is expected to happen the following week.  One would think that since GWPF has done the Walk To End FGM for the last six years, there would be no nervous encounters.  But there is always a challenge that occurs to cause a sweat or two.  As long as the challenge is temporary and can be corrected, the sweat is transformed to relief and smiles.

Next week’s event is expected to be a special one.  Next Friday evening is not going to be coined as a “Mini United Nations” as was last year’s; however it will take on its own title and description once it is all over.  Don’t you want to be a part of it and witness it yourself?

WE ARE AT 15 DAYS FROM the #WALK2ENDFGM

We can no longer say, “Next Month” for the 2-day October event.  We are now in the long-anticipated month of October. So we continue the countdown to the 18th and 19th with only 15 days to the 6th #walk2endfgm.   Register at www.globalwomanpeacefoundation.org, select the pink “Register to Walk” button, and be a part of this memorable event.

If you are wondering why you should register, donate or support this event, here is what F.A. Cole had to say:  “I have benefited greatly from the services provided by Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation. Not only have I received an award from this outstanding organization for my activism work against female genital mutilation, I have been privileged to volunteer at one of their Walks and just 2 years ago, they sponsored me to have the restorative surgery – the first woman they have sponsored for the surgery.  At age eleven, (34 years ago) I forcibly underwent FGM and through divine connection, Ms. Angela Peabody and I met, and it has been like a mother-daughter relationship since. Ms. Angela truly cares for and about the survivors of FGM, and her organization has been a blessing, not just to me but many like me.  If it had not been for her, Global Woman P.E.A.C.E Foundation and their donors, I would not have been #ReUNITeD with my hooha.  That said, I would like to say a huge ‘Thank You’ to Global Woman P.E.A.C.E Foundation and their donors for the wonderful work they do. I hope God richly blesses them.”

Please help support us so there can be many more women like F.A. Cole.  Would you join us and support us?

GWPF Welcomes Jacqui Olkin to the Board of Directors

Before getting to our feature story of the week, GWPF wants to welcome you to the month of October.  This month is significant for several reasons; it is the observance of Domestic Violence; Breast Cancer; Walk To End FGM; and Global Woman Awards.

Now for the feature story of the week:

The Board of Directors of Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation (GWPF) convened this past Saturday for their third quarter board meeting.  During the meeting, the board members formally welcomed Jacqui Olkin as their newest member.  The board members had spent the last three months in the required vetting process, prior to casting their votes two weeks ago.  They elected Olkin after a unanimous vote.  Jacqui had hit the ground without delay, when she joined three of her future fellow board members a week ago to lead their support group in a community outreach in the Tenleytown area of Washington, D.C.

If you are wondering who Jacqui Olkin is, GWPF is pleased to introduce her to you.  She is a web consultant with more than 20 years of experience in communications and publishing. Through her consulting business, Olkin Communications, Jacqui has provided web design and business consulting services to associations and other not-for-profits, commercial businesses, and government agencies for the past eleven years.  Jacqui is the recipient of an Emmy Award as project editor and co-author of the “Biography Project for Schools,” a multimedia educational project with A&E Networks. She has been the strategic lead on numerous award-winning websites.  Jacqui’s articles on web-related topics have been published in Association Publishing magazine and various association newsletters; and she blogs on her own website. She has judged award competitions for association and education websites and print publications for several years. Olkin is also a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), User Experience Professionals Association, (UXPA), the Information Architecture Institute (IAI), and the Association for Information Science and Technology (ASIST).  Jacqui is currently spearheading the development of a values statement for the field of information architecture, to help guide ethical practice in the creation of digital products.

When asked why she is interested in serving as a board member of GWPF, Olkin told Global Woman Newsletter, “I am passionate about the welfare of girls and women in my community and society in general.”  She continued, “I would like to lend my voice and skills to the cause of preventing FGM and providing physical and psychological aid to those who have suffered this horrific abuse.”  When asked what prompted her passion, Jacqui said, “I became interested in working against FGM because many of my neighbors are from FGM practicing countries.  I am worried that my son’s elementary school classmates are at risk of FGM, and I want to advocate for them and all girls who are at risk of FGM.”  Olkin resides in Reston, Virginia with her family.

Jacqui Olkin received her Bachelors of Arts Degree with honors in English Literature and Creative Writing from Brown University.  Prior to that, she graduated from South Lake High School in Fairfax County in Virginia.  She later received her Masters of Arts Degree in English Literature from Boston University in Massachusetts.  Jacqui is a member of the Association of Media & Publishing, and possesses the Silver Award from Washington EdPress for Poster Design.  Prior to founding Olkin Communications Consulting, Jacqui was Editorial Associate at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics in Reston, Virginia.

Global Woman Newsletter asked Jacqui how she feels GWPF will benefit from her involvement on their Board of Directors.  “I have worked in nonprofit communications and publishing for my entire career (20+ years), first as an editor, then as a publications and special project manager, and now as a digital communications consultant and user researcher.”  She continued, “I will be able to advise GWPF on digital communications, technology, messaging, content strategy, being audience-focused, and other aspects of communications.”  Olkin said she has experienced facilitating collaborative projects and meetings, and feels she can bring this experience to the Board.  She added, “Furthermore, I am experienced in managing technology and communications projects and have contacts in digital technology, video, and graphic design that may be of use.  In my work, I write Requests for Proposals (RFPs) and assist clients with vendor selection.  These skills may be useful to GWPF.”

Jacqui says she is an avid runner/jogger, and a huge fan of the Washington Nationals baseball team.   Angela Peabody, who nominated Olkin as a candidate for the Board said, “Jacqui is a great welcomed addition to the Board of Directors and to the entire organization.  We are delighted to have her with us.  We are eager to begin working with her.”

With Jacqui’s skills and talents, it is undoubtful that she will be successful with Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation, and will blend in well with the rest of the board members.  Welcome to the Board, Jacqui!

GWPF’s Support Group Launches Outreach to Communities

This past Saturday, the Support Group for FGM survivors of Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation (GWPF) took their message to the community where they hold their support group workshops.  The group meets in the Tenleytown area of Washington, D.C.  GWPF listens to their survivors and acts on their needs and concerns.  So when the survivors asked to reach out to the community, the organization adhered to them.  It was at their June Support Group workshop when the survivors came up with the idea to go into the community and speak to the people.   They wanted to mobilize their group, and talk to the people in the area about what FGM is and what the end of FGM means to them as survivors.  Some survivors believe that a lot more should be done to raise awareness and educate the American public.

The question is does the American public want to be aware of and educated on FGM?  During the outreach last Saturday by the GWPF representatives, it was clear that they were not welcomed with wide open arms.  However they were not deterred; if anything, they gained more courage, determination, and momentum as they continued to approach passersby.  According to Wikipedia, advocacy aims to influence decisions on social systems, institutions, the economy and politicians through activities by individuals or groups.  It is a known fact that advocacy can be challenging yet rewarding.  Of course it depends on the cause for which one advocates; who the target audience is; the familiarity of the audience to the cause; the dedication and commitment of the advocate; the goals to be achieved through advocacy, etc.

Last Saturday, a 9-year old boy exhibited the qualities of a young advocate.  He had accompanied his grandmother to the outreach activity with much enthusiasm.  But nobody had expected what transpired in his first pitch to a young lady.  With no prior coaching, young Terrence approached a lady and said, “Excuse me, may I have a moment of your time?”  Once he had her attention, he proceeded with his unrehearsed pitch, by telling her the meaning of FGM, how harmful it is to many little girls, and how much he wants it to stop.  Then he ended with this phrase, “And Congress is on our side to end it.”  Whether it was his pitch or the fact that he was a 9-year old, he had his target audience hooked.  Her response was, “You are a little activist!  I expect to see you on TV in the future.”  She took the flyer he offered her, thanked him and wished him the best.  Young Terrence was encouraged, and was inspired to keep approaching others.

The adult representatives received several obstacles in their approach; they found that most people were too hurried, preferred not to stop and listen, were impatient, and somewhat discourteous.  But there were others who offered their attention; they said that they had heard of FGM, and shared their concerns.  Some were of the impression that FGM only happened in Africa.  An East African man they encountered said the practice had stopped, due to laws that had been passed in most African countries.  He was baffled to learn that even though laws had been passed in most countries, little girls were still being violated, due to perpetrators breaking the laws.  “Therefore the practice of FGM is still being practiced”, he was told.  Furthermore, he had no idea that it was being practiced right here in the United States.

Why is there such a lack of interest in FGM in the United States, compared to countries in Europe, and other parts of the world?  The fact of the matter is that most Americans rely solely on what the news media show on television, write in the newspaper, or what they hear through advertisements.  There is a major lack of FGM interest within the American news media.  Think about it, how many times have you turned on the news, and you came across a story about FGM?  The many times can be counted with fingers remaining on your second hand.  Even when the FBI made their big FGM arrests a couple of years ago in Michigan, there was not a blow up in the news media about it.  It is either that there is a denial that FGM exists in America, or it is due to lack of information and education of FGM, or perhaps, all of the above.  It is of utmost importance that the news media in America raise awareness, and capture the attention of their audiences.  This is what Wikipedia also says in regards to advocacy:  “Advocacy can include many activities that a person or organization undertakes, including media campaigns, public speaking, commissioning and publishing research or conducting exit poll or the filing of an amicus brief.”  Notice ‘media campaigns’ is the first on that list.  FGM advocates have used public speaking for many years as part of their work against the practice.  They have also engaged in extensive research and publications on the practice.

But when FGM is compared to other women’s issues and harmful practices against women, there is hardly a fare comparison.  Everyone in the U.S. knows what domestic violence is; they know what sex trafficking is; what sexual assault is; and what sexual harassment is.  They are fully aware of the existence of those violations against women and girls here in the U.S.  However when you stop someone on the street and ask, “Have you heard of something called female genital mutilation?” With the exception of a few, you will get a blank stare.  Granted, strides have been made and things are a little better than a decade ago, but the U.S. is still far behind the rest of the world when it comes to FGM.

It is incumbent upon FGM advocates and activists to educate and inform the American public of female genital mutilation.  Since anyone who advocates against a harmful practice or act is assumed to be passionate and against that practice or act, then FGM advocates must be aggressive in educating the public.  In other words, advocacy against FGM must never slow down or stop.  Had advocates against voter suppression for women in the early 20th Century eased off or slowed down or even stopped, women would not have the opportunity to go to the poles today and exercise their rightful civic duties.  What if Dr. Martin Luther King and his companions had given up and stopped pursuing the civil rights movement?  People of color today would not have equal rights in the 21st Century.  You might be saying, “We’ve got the picture or the message.”  Hopefully you do get it because those examples were intentionally meant to give you the picture or the message.

GWPF and their survivor support group hope to continue their community outreach, in spite of the reluctance to listen by people in the community.  It is hoped that you will be inspired to join them, or even invite them to your own community.  Perhaps young 9-year old Terrence’s story will be your inspiration.  Or you might just get angry enough when you think of the little girls that are at risk in this country of this odiously dreadful practice.
