We give you five scrambled words each week. We hope you enjoy playing.
Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation (GWPF) has secured
the date for their 2020 Walk to End FGM.
The organization announced late last week, after confirmation from the
National Park Service in Washington, D.C., that they have already secured
Saturday, October 17, 2020 for their 2020 Walk To End FGM. This means that the Global Woman Awards will
be held on the evening of Friday, October 16, 2020. Please save those dates.
The National Park Service encourages organizations to
reserve their desired event dates for the National Mall in Washington at least
a year in advance. With the Domestic
Violence month and Breast Cancer month, October is a highly popular month for
events in Washington, D.C. “While we
prefer to walk in the month of October, we also want to avoid a very cold or
rainy day.” A representative from the
organization remarked. “The middle of
the month is warmer than the end of the month.”
She continued. “We had been
fortunate to have sunny weather from the first walk in 2014 until last year
when we encountered brisk winds and torrential rains for our 2018 Walk
Weekend.” She explained, “We know that
there is nothing we can do about the weather, which is an act of nature, but we
were very fortunate this year to have a made-to-order weather day.” The organization now considers the use of
tents at the site of the program, and providing available umbrellas for all
participants in the future, based on the weather forecast.
The Planning Committee of GWPF wants everyone to save
and remember the dates, Friday, October 16, 2020 and Saturday, October 17, 2020
for the next Global Woman Awards and the Walk to End FGM respectively. The organization will begin to announce their
speakers as early as March, as they receive confirmation from invited
speakers. The registration and
fundraising pages are expected to be launched in January, to give the organization
ten full months for registration and fundraising. Updates will continue through future editions
of this newsletter on registrations, team formations, fundraising,
sponsorships, speakers, award nominees, etc.
Since 2014, GWPF has hosted their largest awareness
and fundraising event each year. If you
were unaware, on November 8, 2014, Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation started
the Walk To End FGM on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. to raise awareness
about female genital mutilation (FGM) in the United States, and to raise funds
to help support the well-being of the survivors and the at-risk girls of
FGM. The organization was not certain of
how the idea of such an event would be received, but it was encouraging after a
great turnout in 2014. It was then that
the decision was made to make it an annual event. The awareness-raising and fundraising event
has enjoyed success each year, including this year. After each year, the
organization plans to take a step forward toward better turnout, better
fundraising, and more effective awareness.
Three years ago, someone approached GWPF about hosting
the Walk To End FGM in London. While the
organization welcomed the idea, they decided to revisit the possibility of
holding the event in other cities only after they had held it in Washington for
five consecutive years. Now that GWPF
has just hosted their 6th 5K Walk this month in Washington, D.C., others have
expressed interest in hosting the Walk To End FGM in such cities as Frankfurt,
London, Sidney, Bordeaux, and Los Angeles.
If this does occur, the event would take place simultaneously in
Washington, D.C. and any additional cities on the same day, taking in
consideration the time difference in each city.
Talks of logistics are expected to begin prior to 2020, and when plans
are finalized, an announcement will be made.
Anyone or organization interested in hosting the Walk To End FGM
simultaneously with the one in Washington, D.C., please contact GWPF at info@globalwomanpeacefoundation.org. It appears that the Walk To End FGM has
certainly peaked an international interest, but GWPF is also interested in
domestic organizations and/or individuals organizing the Walk Weekend. GWPF would work with the organization or
individuals hosting the walk in t-shirt designs, programming, speaker
selection, registration with the local Park Service, and setting up the walk
registration and fundraising site. GWPF
will keep you informed and updated on the progress of possible cities, and if
there will be a simultaneous walk next year.
Please mark your calendar and save the date, Friday, October 16th,
and Saturday, October 17th 2020.
Stay tuned.

The Executive Committee, the Board of Directors, the
Advisory Board, the Nomination Committee, Volunteers and Event Planners of
Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation (GWPF) send their profound appreciation to
all of their sponsors, donors, supporters, speakers, awardees, presenters,
panelists, partners, and walkers for helping to make the 2019 Global Woman
Awards and the Walk To End FGM a great success this past Friday evening and
Saturday afternoon. GWPF hosted their 2-day
event, with the activities commencing with their Global Woman Awards ceremony
Friday evening at the Milken Institute for Public Health at George Washington
University. The Friday event was in
collaboration with George Washington University in explaining why laws and
policies are important in protecting girls from female genital mutilation (FGM)
in the U.S.
Following refreshments, light fare, mixing and
mingling, the guests were escorted to the auditorium for the program to
begin. With the Mistress of Ceremony,
Tyra (Tyra G) Garlington opening by giving a brief history of the organization,
and introducing Dr. Karen McDonnell of the Milken Institute, Angela Peabody of
GWPF, silent auction items, the excitement and curiosity grew. Tyra kept the audience laughing and engaged,
as they made their way through the evening.
Angela Peabody respectively gave welcome remarks, and
asked the audience to join her in a moment of silence. She asked them to remember their 2018 First
Place Literary Awardee, Kameel Ahmady, who had been with them only a year
ago. She said, “As we gather here
tonight, Kameel sits in an Iranian prison for his work against injustices
against women, including FGM.” She told
their guests that Kameel’s only offense is using his literary ability to bring
attention to the blatant injustices imposed on women. She asked that they keep Kameel in thought
and prayer.
Peabody then shared some of the work and successes
Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation has accomplished in the last 6 years. She turned the podium over to Dr. Karen McDonnell,
who briefly unveiled an educational toolkit on FGM which the Milken Institute
recently completed. She told the
audience that the toolkit is designed to be used by school nurses, other
medical personnel, teachers, and the general public. Angela Peabody returned to the podium to
introduce the Keynote Speaker of the evening, Dr. Morissanda Kouyate of
Inter-African Committee. In his
fifteen-minute PowerPoint presentation, Dr. Kouyate explained the importance of
laws and policies in ending FGM in the U.S. as well as other parts of the
world. He described the types of laws,
forces of laws, the place and role of laws, and why there should be laws
against FGM. Dr. Kouyate spoke about the
difficulties in implementing laws, and the actions to be taken to uphold those
laws once implemented. He emphatically
said, “We imperatively need to develop anti-FGM laws, and have the courage to
implement them.” He continued, “The best
way to undermine a law is to refuse to enforce it.” It was evident that Dr. Kouyate is a devout
advocate against the practice of FGM. He
was instrumental in having the United Nations declare February 6th
as the “International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM”. He shared his bewilderment when he heard that
a Federal Judge in Michigan had thrown out a Federal FGM case from the 2017 FBI
arrests in that state, and declared it unconstitutional. Dr. Kouyate drew laughter and applause when
he said, “I would like to confront that Judge face to face.”
Shelby Quast of Equality Now and a 2016 GWPF Awardee
took to the podium and shared how easy it is to send emails to your
Congressional Representatives and Senators to support special legislation
against FGM. She invited the audience to
take their phones and go to her website, click on “Take Action” and use the
self-populated text in an email to U.S. Congress. Other panelists of the evening joining Dr.
Kouyate and Shelby Quast were Michelle Mitchell of Partnerships for Health in
the state of Maine, Chisina Kapungu of the International Center for Research on
Women, and Rahmah Abdulaleem of KARAMAH.
GWPF recognized and honored 9 people on Friday
evening, including a graduate student from New York, Edwige Dossou-Kitti for the
“Student Ambassador Award”. Dr.
Morissanda Kouyate received the “Man of the Year Award” while Monalisa Dugue
received the “Lisa C. Bruch Woman of the Year Award”. Attorney Sandra Roland received the “Legal
Award”, Dr. Willa Jones was the recipient of the “Medical Award”, Djessou
Kouyate received the “Advocacy Award”, Maryum Saifee received the “Survivor
Activist Award”, Dr. Ghada Khan was the recipient of the “Education/Training
Award”, and Representative Thomas P. Murt was awarded the “Political
Award”.
The delicious refreshments and food was the product of
some top Culinary Art students in the
Washington, D.C. area, most of them attending the Prince George’s Community
College Culinary Art School. The purpose
was to offer knowledge of FGM to those students and their faculty, as well as
helping them receive the exposure they will need in becoming professional
chefs.
On Saturday afternoon, the crowd could not have asked
for better weather. At the National
Sylvan Theater, Representative Thomas Murt shared his work he has done in
Pennsylvania to have FGM criminalized.
He said how ironic it was for them to be standing at the Washington
Monument discussing an injustice against girls and women, when Dr. Martin
Luther King delivered his speech about his dream only a few miles away. After the moving and riveting keynote from
Representative Murt, it was time to hand out the prizes to the 3 top teams that
raised the highest amounts. Assisting
with giving out the prizes were Dr. Kouyate and Senator Michael D. Brown. Third prize went to Jacqui Olkin’s team, a
member of GWPF’s board and second prize went to Dr. Karen McDonnell’s team
while Maria Sanchez, a new Advisory Board member walked away with first prize. Maria, who flew in from California only to
attend the 2-day event had set up her team at $0 only less than 3 weeks prior
to the event; she continued to raise funds, while surpassing other teams until
she worked her way to first place.
Following the consumption of bananas, donated by Giant
Foods, granola bars, donated by GWPF’s board member Wallicia Gill, and bottled
water donated by Wegmans, the crowd lined up and began the walk from Memorial
Drive and 15th Street in Southwest Washington. They made their way in the direction of the
Lincoln Memorial, passing various other memorials until they finally arrived at
the steps of the Lincoln Memorial, just before the Reflecting Pool. They all sat down on the steps for a group
photo. As a tourist nearby offered to
take the group photo, he became involved with the chant, “No more FGM!” The tourist said, “On the count of 3, say
it.” The crowd roared, “No more FGM!” The crowd drew the attention of other
tourists, and before long, they too were filming and snapping photos of the
group with purple shirts, chanting “No more FGM.
GWPF has already applied to the National Park Service
for their permit for next year, and will have confirmation later this
week. They will announce next year’s
date in the upcoming newsletter. They
hope to see you in October 2020!

busiest week of the year. Their 6th
#walk2endfgm will take place on Saturday, October 19th, and on
Friday, the 18th is their Global Woman Awards. In collaboration with the Milken Institute
for Public Health at George Washington University, the Global Woman Awards hope
to further awareness of female genital mutilation (FGM), while a panel of 6 explains
why laws and policies are important in preventing FGM in the United States. The theme this year is “Why Laws and Policies
Are Important In Preventing FGM In the U.S.”
Global Woman
Awards candidates are expected from various points in the U.S. They are
Pennsylvania State Representative, Thomas P. Murt who was relentless
in his efforts of putting forth a bill in Pennsylvania to finally have FGM
criminalized in his state this year; Public Defender, Sandra Roland who, with
the support of Torture Abolition and Survivors Support Coalition and the Horn
of Africa Community Institute has pursued a pro bono practice representing
asylum seekers who have endured female genital mutilation or political
persecution; Dr. Ghada Khan, who currently serves as the Network Coordinator

activity that reaches out to thousands of people to educate and raise awareness
about FGM in the diaspora community, that girls can be initiated without
mutilation; Maryum Saifee, who is a 2019 Presidential Leadership Scholar has written
about her experience as a survivor of Female Genital Mutilation in her personal
capacity. Prior to her fellowship, Maryum served as a U.S. diplomat in the
Middle East and South Asia with postings in Cairo, Baghdad, and Lahore; Dr. Willa
D. Jones, a licensed professional counselor and school psychologist in the
District of Columbia has spent the last 2 plus years volunteering as the
Psychological Counselor with the GWPF’s Monthly Support Group Workshop for FGM
survivors; Edwige Dossou-Kitti, who came to know about the practice of FGM at
her mosque in New York City gave her the encouragement to start advocating for
victims of FGM, child marriage, and human trafficking; Dr. Morissanda Kouyate,
a Health Service Management Trainer is an expert in the fight against FGM,
child marriage, and other traditional practices, affecting the health of women
and children. He can be credited with
helping to have February 6th declared by the United Nations as the

Those are the deserving recipients of the Global Woman Award this year.
In 2015, Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation decided to
show recognition, respect and appreciation to people who dedicate their time to
the campaign against FGM, and other injustices against women and girls. They felt, by showing recognition would also
serve as an inspiration for individuals to become more involved in the work
toward ending FGM and other injustices against women and girls. Therefore in October 2015 the organization
recognized their first group of award recipients, including Martha Leslie
Allen, Shelby Quast, Dr. Marci Bowers, Jaha Dukureh, F.A. Cole, Mariam Bojang,
Fatoumata Kande, and others for their dedicated work. The recognition gesture became an annual
culture for Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation.
Then in 2016 the organization awarded the first man,
Artist Godfrey Williams-Okorodus for using his art work to advocate against
FGM. In the same year, the Global Woman
Awards recognized the first Student Ambassador, Amani DeShield for introducing
the campaign against FGM to her Middle School in Hagerstown, Maryland in the
U.S. This category of Student Ambassador
was created to encourage students and young people to become involved in the
campaign against FGM, while raising awareness among their peers. The second man, Virginia State Senator
Richard H. Black was recognized in 2017 for his diligence in putting forth
legislation to have FGM criminalized in his state. In 2018, several men, such as Dexter Dias,
David Indeje and Kameel Ahmady were honored with the Global Woman Award.
The Mistress of Ceremony for the evening is the
fabulous International Radio Host, Tyra (Tyra G) Garlington of Fairfax,
Virginia. She has been a teacher and
principal, whose belief in the ability of children to rise above their bleak
surroundings helped to turn around an entire school. She has been a
member of the clinical staff at the University of California, San Diego,
helping tormented individuals find their way to peace. Who is better to emcee an evening of this nature
but a woman who has been a volunteer-mentor and Education Pillar Chair on the
Board of Leadership in Fairfax Virginia, guiding the development of the next
generation of leaders?
Presenting the awards in each category are advocates,
activists and people who are involved in the campaign against FGM in various
ways. They are from the non-profit,
private, and education sectors. In
presenting the awardees, the message from the presenters will have an
educational angle, in conjunction with why laws and policies are important in
preventing FGM in the U.S.
A silent auction is part of the Friday evening
program, with donated items from Southwest Airlines; the National Basketball
Association; Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) and other donated items
from individuals. All proceeds from the
silent auction will support the survivors of FGM with whom Global Woman
P.E.A.C.E. Foundation works and supports.
Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation hopes you will join them in the 2-day event, starting Friday, the 18th with the Global Woman Awards, and then Saturday the 19th on the National Mall to participate in the #walk2endfgm.
