What the “Walk To End FGM” Means To Me – Part II

By: A.M. Peabody

Last week, I shared with you Part One of what the Walk To End FGM means to me, by recounting the turn of events in 2014 when we gave birth to the 5K walk.  This week, I will share with you what role the Walk To End FGM plays in the lives of the women with whom we service; and you will learn how we began to meet women that had experienced female genital mutilation (FGM).  After our success with the first Walk To End FGM in 2014, it was evident that we would hold a second of such event the following year.

We were not as green in our planning process as we had been in 2014.  We knew when to submit our permit application to the National Park Service a year in advance, and how to schedule the logistics meeting with them.  We had established business relationships with service providers, such as tent rental, porta john rental, t-shirt order, generator rental to provide electricity; and we had supporters, sponsors, and participants from the previous year.  There was a slight ease in the planning process in 2015.  We had secured speakers for the day, volunteers, registrations were still coming in, and we felt we were able to relax.  Since we had hosted our first FGM survivor as a speaker in 2014, we had invited Mariam Bojang, a Gambian survivor to share her story with the crowd in 2015.  I had met Mariam earlier in the year when we both had been guests on an Al Jazeera TV Show to discuss FGM.  Dr. Marci Bowers had also been a guest on that same show, who had been scheduled to be our Keynote Speaker that year.

As I sat at my desk pondering over our checklist, I felt pleased that there were not many pending items left.  Then my phone rang, and it was a young lady who introduced herself; she told me that she was a survivor of FGM from Sierra Leone.  She was interested in registering for the Walk To End FGM, and someone had referred her to me.  She was also interested in receiving whatever service we offered to FGM survivors.  We conversed for more than an hour.  She was interested in the genital restorative surgery which she had heard Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation was sponsoring.  I asked if she would like to share her story at our pre-walk event, and she readily accepted the invitation.  That young lady was F.A. Cole.  She was the fourth adult survivor of FGM whom I would meet who was openly willing to share her story with the public.

Rewinding a bit – 2015 was the year we had decided to honor a group of women that had made a difference in the lives of women and girls affected by FGM.  We designed and packaged nicely printed paper awards to hand out to several women on the day of the walk, as part of the pre-walk program.  After listening to F.A.’s story, I proposed that we add her to the list of honored women that year.  I had only had a single phone conversation with the young lady, and we already had her on the program as a speaker, and one of the honorees.  I had never done anything like it before but I had a good feeling about the decision; it was a leap of faith.  That year, the event was covered by CBN Television from Southern Virginia.  They had previously interviewed one of our guest speakers and awardees, Shelby Quast of Equality Now a couple of days prior to the event.

We had thought that the 2014 walk day had been blustering cold, but the 2015 walk day was far colder.  Everyone was bundled up as they arrived, but the sun came out and provided warmth during the pre-walk program.  When F.A. Cole took the podium, I had no idea what to expect because we had just met that same morning.  I had never heard her deliver a speech before then.  She began with a resounding “Good Morning” and what followed after her greeting was breathtaking.  Her voice resonated as she told her riveting story from being molested as a child, to experiencing FGM at 11 years old, to being raped later in life, to her remorse for having an abortion, and then revealing that she was the mother of a 21-year old son.  With the exception of having experienced FGM, the rest of her revelation was new to me.  I was as speechless as everyone else in the audience.  Anyone who has met F.A. Cole has to agree with me that she looks no more than 30 years old.  She drew the attention of passersby and tourists who had nothing to do with the event.  They all walked over to our site and listened intently to F.A. as she shared her unbelievable story.  The volunteers later disclosed to me that the onlookers or uninvited guests walked up to the table and left cash donations after hearing F.A. Cole’s story.  They had walked away with an earful of knowledge on something called female genital mutilation (FGM).  That day was the birth of a lasting relationship between Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation and Cole.  She was the first FGM survivor to begin calling me Ms. Angela, and referring to me as her mother.  She set the tempo for the service we offer to FGM survivors today.  Fast forward – F.A. Cole currently serves on our Board of Directors as the representative for FGM survivors, and she leads the special Survivor-Only Support Group in our organization.  Two years later in 2017, F.A. would be the first woman whose restorative surgery was sponsored by our organization.

We had successfully hosted our second Walk To End FGM, and the momentum had escalated.  The event had attracted the international audience, and the following year in 2016, we hosted a much larger crowd from various countries in Europe and parts of the United States.  But among the hoopla and momentum, we still had the problem that inspired us to hold such an event in the first place; the continuing practice of FGM.  It was clear to us and other advocates and activists that FGM was not going away.  The following year in 2017, there were the alarming arrests by the FBI in Detroit, Michigan of a couple of doctors for practicing FGM on little girls in their clinic.  We realized that a walk or a race against it would not send it away; however we had begun to raise awareness, especially here in the United States.

Anyone who knows me knows how passionate I am about the work we do at Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation (GWPF).  When the subject of FGM comes up, I can go on for hours.  I hold the work, the 5K walk, honoring people, and the organization dear to my heart. But the women and girls to whom we service are the dearest to my heart.  They are an extended family to me.  They refer to me as their mother, and their children call me their grandmother.  I regard such an honor bestowed on me by the women and girls as the highest honor I could receive.  I feel responsible for them; I love them from my heart, and I am committed to making myself available when they need me.  When they cry to me, I console them; I pray with and for them; I offer hugs, jokes, and laughter when I think they need it.  They all have 24/7 access to me whenever they need me.  My work with GWPF extends far beyond the Support Group Workshop, the counseling, the surgery, and Walk Day.  What the Walk To End FGM means to me is when we can bring like-minded advocates and activists together in a weekend from all over the world, and show the women and girls we service how important their well-being is to us.

Thank you for reading this week’s story.  If you missed last week’s story, and would like to catch up, please let us know and we will send it to you.  I hope you will be inspired to join us on Friday, October 18th at 950 New Hampshire Avenue, NW in Washington, D.C. at 6:30pm and on Saturday, October 19th at the National Sylvan Theater at the corner of Washington Memorial Drive, SW and 15th Street, SW in Washington, D.C. at 12:00pm.  It is the Walk To End FGM, and this is what it means to me.

What the “Walk To End FGM” Means To Me – Part I

When I first thought of organizing and hosting a walk or a race against the practice of female genital mutilation (FGM), I was unsure of where to begin and how we would organize it.  I made my proposal to the Board of Directors for their approval.  They balked at me and said, “We have never done anything like it, and we are a small and new organization.”  Anyone who knows me well knows that I do not give up easily, especially on things about which I am passionate.  The work against FGM happens to be one of those things.  I made my case to them, “True we have never organized such an event, but I was a walker in the Susan G. Komen’s ‘Race for the Cure’ for several years.”  I had even helped to raise funds by getting my employer at the time to match each dollar I raised from local merchants for the cure of breast cancer.  I was finally successful in convincing the board members to approve my proposal to host a race or a walk against FGM.  They told me, if we were able to organize no less than 50 people to participate, we would continue and make it an annual event.  It was a challenge, and I was determined to succeed with it.

I got to work, and with the assistance of a couple of the board members and volunteers, we outlined our plan to organize a 5K walk.  We conducted research on how to plan and organize a race or walk.  We made the decision to hold a walk-only as opposed to a race; a race can include walkers, runners, bikers, etc.  We still had not decided on what to call the 5K walk; board members blurted out some names, but none of them really struck a chord with us.  Then the name, “Walk To End FGM” suddenly came to mind, and everyone agreed that it was what we would use.  It sounded as though the name had been used for years.  We did prefer to keep it as simple as we could without complications.  Working out the logistics was a challenge, but it was all part of organizing the event.  We established a checklist, and everyone was assigned a responsibility on that list.  Meeting and working with the National Park Service was a learning experience; we had no idea what was expected of us but we took their instructions and advice and used them to our advantage.  We learned that the Park Service only allowed bottled water, granola health bars and bananas as edibles in the park.  We utilized social media to help promote the event, and we arranged for a graphic designer to design a special logo that would identify the Walk To End FGM.  We handed out flyers at area metro stations, and left flyers on cars in parking lots.  We set up appointments with like-minded organizations and called on them to participate, sponsor or donate to the event.

The t-shirts were delivered only two days prior to Walk-Day; they were not pre-folded to be passed out on the day of the walk.  I found myself folding hundreds of t-shirts for two days, while checking off items on the checklist, and packing everything we needed to be transported to the Washington National Mall.  The walk was scheduled for Saturday, November 8, 2014 at 8:00 in the morning.  We the organizers and volunteers were expected to arrive at the site by 6:00 that morning.  It was a bitterly cold morning but we played music at the site, while we stuffed giveaway bags, set up the tents and prepared ourselves for the arrivals.  Our first sponsors were Giant Food, Incorporated, Staples, City Gate, Coca-Cola, Brite Radio, Whole Foods, Press the President, Eye Images Media, and Natura Foods.  Their logos and names were printed on the back of the t-shirts.

As the participants began to arrive, we tried to do headcounts but as our count exceeded the number 50, we began to celebrate.  We had hit the required 50 mark and they continued to arrive and line up to claim their t-shirts and giveaway bags.  Board members were giving each other high-five saying, “We did it!”  Indeed we had done it; more than 250 participants showed up that early November morning.  The cold did not dissuade them; they were there to walk and participate in something that had not been done in the U.S. prior to that morning.

I had an emotional moment when I looked across the National Mall, and saw the participants lining up to begin the 5K walk.  I fought back my teary moment as I joined the group to walk.  The walk was led by an 11 year old boy who had traveled from Indiana by road with his parents and a group from their organization, Hope 2 Liberia.  Organizations and individuals joined us from New York, New Jersey, Indiana, West Virginia, Maryland, Washington, D.C., Virginia, Connecticut, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Florida, and Canada.  The Media was represented and videotaped the walk and the entire post-walk program.  They interviewed participants, board members, and the speakers of the day.  We had special Media badges to identify them from the rest of the crowd.  In spite of the fact that we were raising awareness of an atrocious practice on little girls, the day was a joyous one.  Joyous that we had attracted and gathered more than 250 people; joyous that the public was actually learning about this heinous act; joyous that a Liberian young woman had just shared her story to the public for the first time, that she had survived FGM at the age of 8; and joyous that we had held our first Walk To End FGM.

Although we felt like we had broken the first barrier to informing the American public about something that was foreign to them, we were still hungry for more.  We decided to request an October date for future walks, and not settle for a November date.  We had discovered from the National Park Service that without submitting an application for permit a year prior, we would not obtain a preferred date for our event.  Therefore we made a concerted effort to submit our application prior to 2015 for the second 5K walk.  We knew that the Walk To End FGM would become an annual event, but we began to ask ourselves, “What’s next?”

After supporting and encouraging our first FGM survivor to publicly reveal and share her story on November 8, 2014, we knew there were many other survivors who needed help.  He hoped that the Walk To End FGM would not only raise awareness for Americans, but would become a mean to attract FGM survivors to come forward and receive help.  After all, without survivors and at-risk girls, there would not be a need for the Walk To End FGM.  The reason why we were doing any of it was because of those women, young and old who had experienced FGM, and the girls to whom we could prevent it from happening.  As the commendations came in for holding the successful 5K walk, I continued to remind our board members that this was not about us; that it was about the women and girls whose lives are affected by this archaic, heinous, atrocious, and unnecessary practice.

What the Walk To FGM means to me is far more than a 5K or public gathering of speeches and awareness.  I want women to learn how to live their lives of post-FGM years in safety and confidence, without physical and psychological pain.  I want little girls to live in safety without the suspense of not knowing when the day arrives for them to be taken away to a cutter.  I want to see the end to female genital mutilation, when we will no longer need to hold the Walk To End FGM.

Announcing Our 2019 Global Woman Award Recipients

In 2015, Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation (GWPF) created the Global Woman Awards, a way to give recognition and honor to women, men and students who dedicate their time to the campaign against female genital mutilation (FGM) and other injustices on women and girls.

The organization began by recognizing women in 2015 that had used their talents and professional attributes to help in the campaign to end FGM.  Then in 2016 GWPF awarded the first man, Godfrey Williams-Okorodus for using this art work to advocate against FGM.  In the same year, the Global Woman Awards recognized the first student, Amani DeShield for introducing the campaign against FGM to her Middle School in Maryland in the U.S.  The Student Ambassador category was created to encourage students to become involved in the campaign against FGM.  In 2017, the second man, Virginia State Senator Richard H. Black was recognized for his diligence in criminalizing FGM in his state.  Then in 2018, the Awards Committee added another award category, “Woman of the Year”, and this year, a “Man of the Year” category was added.  The Awards Committee is responsible for vetting and nominating individuals who have exemplified performance in the campaign against FGM and other harmful practices.

Some of the awards recipients in 2015 were American Urologist, Marci Bowers, Equality Now Director, Shelby Quast, Jaha Dukureh, Fatoumata Kande of IAC-USA, Hibo Wardere, Martha Allen of Women’s Institute for Freedom of the Press, F.A. Cole, Mariam Bojang, the late Lisa C. Bruch, and a few others.  In 2016, some of the awardees were Susan Masling, Kristin Hoffmann, Diane Walsh, Elisabeth Wilson, Hilary Burrage, Missy Crutchfield, Susan Gibbs, Andrea Roane, Sherelle Carper, Godfrey Williams-Okorodus and others.  The 2017 awardees were French Urologist, Pierre Foldes, Frederique Martz, Edna Adan, Mariya Taher, Virginia Senator Richard Black, French Prosecutor, Linda Weil-Curiel, Tobe Levin, Arifa Nasim, Adama Diaby, and Maggie O’Kane.  In 2018 the awardees were Susan McLucas, Adriana Kaplan, Karen McDonnell, Hazel Barrett, Barbara Nowak, Giselle Portenier, Sarah Champion, Heather Sirocki, Severina Lemachokoti, Marie-Claire Moraldo, Kameel Ahmady, Ramah Abdulaleem, Ayodele Gansallo, Dexter Dias, Egyptian Physician, Mawaheb El-Mouelhy, American Gynecologist, Ranit Mishori, David Indeje, Maria Akhter, Fatu Drame, Beryl Dorsett, and Joetta Brown.

If you wonder what it takes to be nominated and selected for one of these awards, here are the categories and criteria:

Lisa C. Bruch Woman of the Year – This is the second year this category is being awarded.  This year, it is named after the late Lisa C. Bruch who served for several years as an Advisor to the Board of Directors of GWPF.  Lisa was the longest and largest donor of the organization, and supported the recognition given to advocates.  The recipient of this award must have exemplified Lisa’s expectations and the qualities for which she stood.

Man of the Year – This category is a new addition this year.  There are men who do a great deal to protect girls and women from various types of violence, including FGM but they might not be eligible for any of the other 9 categories.  This individual must be exceptional in his contribution to the campaign against FGM and/or other gender based violence.  This category was created to encourage and inspire men to become involved in the campaign against FGM and other forms of gender based violence.

WITH 57 DAYS TO “WALK TO END FGM” LET’S REGISTER!!

The countdown continues for registration to the Walk To End FGM, scheduled for Saturday, October 19th on the Washington National Mall.  Make sure you register early to pay the early bird fee of $35.  Our Keynote Speaker this year at the Walk To End FGM is Thomas P. Murt of the House of Representatives of the 152nd District in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.  Representative Murt was instrumental in getting the law against FGM passed recently in his state, so you do not want to miss his speech.

Started in 2014, Walk to End FGM is a 5K charity walk-A-thon against female genital mutilation (FGM).  FGM is the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons.  Most girls undergo FGM when they are between 5 and 15 years old.  Practiced for more than 5 centuries, FGM made its way to Europe, the U.K., Australia and North America due to the continuation of the practice by immigrants from countries where FGM is common.

Mission and Purpose

The mission of our organization is to empower women and girls through education to eradicate gender based violence, with focus on female genital mutilation.  The purpose of the Walk to End FGM is to raise awareness about the practice of female genital mutilation and raise funds to support our programs.  The organization saw the need to educate and inform the public in the U.S. that this heinous and atrocious practice is not only a problem in Africa, Asia and the Middle East; that it is a problem of the world.

Proceeds

The proceeds raised from the Walk to End FGM are used to support the programs for the rehabilitation of FGM survivors and the prevention of FGM on girls.

GWPF’s 2018 Award Recipient Arrested & Detained In Iran

It is in this edition of the Global Woman Newsletter that the 2019 Award Recipients would have been announced to the world.  Instead, the disturbing news of the imprisonment of Global Woman Awards’ 2018 Literary Awardee, Mr. Kameel Ahmady changed the plans in making that announcement.

According to the Center for Human Rights in Iran, Anthropologist and an Iranian-British citizen, Kameel Ahmady was arrested and detained on Sunday, August 11, 2019.  The Human Rights Center reports that the Iranian authorities have not allowed Kameel’s family to visit him since his detention more than a week ago.

Born in the Kurdish city of Mahabad in Iran’s West Azerbaijan Province, Kameel received his Bachelor’s Degree from the University of the Arts, London, and his Master’s Degree from the University of Kent, Canterbury in the United Kingdom.  He received his British Citizenship approximately 25 years ago, but has spent most of those years conducting his research studies and literary work in Iran with his family.  In 2016, Kameel’s book, In the Name of Tradition: Female Genital Mutilation in Iran was published by Dr. Tobe Levin’s publishing company, UnCut Voices.  His book was hailed by the Guardian and the International Gender Studies Center.

In the Foreword of the book, Kameel wrote, “Female Genital Mutilation is an issue of urgency to feminists, human rights campaigners and social activists as well as international organizations such as UNICEF and many responsible governments determined to end it. I join them.”  He said, “This research began when I returned from Europe after a prolonged absence to my birthplace, Iranian Kurdistan, to learn more about FGM. For several years I had worked in Africa with humanitarian relief NGOs and observed UN projects to combat excision in countries like Egypt, Somalia, Kenya and Sudan.”  Kameel also added in his book, “Remembering hushed tones from my childhood suggesting that FGM, locally called sunnet existed in some parts of Iranian Kurdistan, I decided to conduct some preliminary research beginning with my own family and close relatives. Imagine my shock when uncovering evidence that FGM had long existed in areas of Mukriyan and that my grandmothers, mother and sister had all endured it.”

As an Anthropologist, Kameel has conducted extensive research, not only on female genital mutilation, but such controversial topics as child marriage, gender, honor killing, homosexuality, and white marriage.  In 2017, a year after his book was published Kameel produced a documentary on FGM in the Northwestern part of Iran.  That same year, he received the IKWRO True Honor Award.  His first book, Another Look at East and Southeast of Turkey was published in 2009 in Istanbul.  It is a guideline for traveling to the east of Turkey, and provides an anthropological and ethnographic approach towards 15 provinces that are inhabited by the Kurds of Turkey.

In 2018, he completed his most recent study, A House on Water: A Comprehensive Study on Temporary Marriage and Sigheh Mahramiat wasreleased in both English and Farsi.  Kameel said about this book, “I discovered that a great number of children are married to other children, and to older men.”  Kameel was excited about this latest project on white marriage, which is about cohabitation.  He said, “Cohabitation is a new trend among the young men and women in Iran.  This type of relationship is illegal in Iran, and is hidden from the public.”  He added, “Some of the implications of this are that problems such as domestic and sexual violence, abuse, and abortion go unreported.”

In October 2018, Kameel traveled from Iran to Washington, D.C., after being nominated by an International Nominating Committee to receive the Global Woman Award in the Literary Category.  His journey to Washington, D.C. took him more than 18 hours, but he was still enthusiastic at the prospect of being nominated.  He said when he was notified of his nomination, “I will come to Washington, no matter how long it takes me, just to receive such an honor.”  Kameel won first place in the Literary Category for his work on gender, children and minority issues.  He delivered a moving acceptance speech that evening, by which many in the audience still remember him.

Ahmady’s wife, Shafagh Rahmani told the Center for Human Rights, “I was traveling when Kameel was arrested.  I came back on Monday and on Tuesday I went to the court in Evin Prison to ask about his situation.”  She continued, “The judicial authorities did not respond to my questions.  They told me that his case had to do with national security and he was arrested by intelligence agents.”  Mr. Ahmady who works as an independent researcher and writer in Iran has always been transparent in everything he did.  His wife told the Human Rights Center, “I really don’t know why he was arrested. He had never been detained, summoned or threatened before.”  His wife continued, “They said a one-month detention order had been issued against him and it was probably going to be extended. I asked why my husband hadn’t called me yet. They said he would.”

According to the Human Rights Center, only a one-minute phone call from the Evin Prison had been allowed from Kameel since his detention on the 11th and no contact with his family.  His wife told the Center, “On August 13th, around 6:30 in the evening, Kameel called me,” she added. “He spoke just for a minute and said he was feeling fine and asked me to get him a lawyer. I need to be informed of my husband’s situation and his case. I want to see and speak to him.”  Kameel’s wife contends that all of her husband’s research work has been done and published independently with permission from the Islamic Guidance Ministry.

The news of Kameel’s arrest and detention has been equally disturbing and concerning for FGM advocates and activists here in the United States and other parts of the world.  His work in the interest of women, children and the youth is now on hold since he is detained.  Global Woman P.E.A.C.E. Foundation sends out an appeal, asking for the release of Kameel Ahmady (#freekameel) in order for him to continue the brilliant work that he does.  Prayers and thoughts continue to be expressed for Kameel and his family from colleagues around the world.
